My KANIN CLUB Experience

I have been hearing about Kanin Club for like forever! I just live near Alabang but I don't really get that chance to experience what it offers. But today, thanks to my high school friends, we chose KC as the venue of our get-together this year.

KC gets packed during lunch and dinner time. True enough, we waited for an hour and a half to be seated at their Westgate Alabang branch. We almost gave up but I thank God we didn't! The servers were friendly and they do serve fast. Every dish is meant for sharing so don't go there alone. It's always nice to enjoy good food in the company of good friends and family. Here are just some of the good food I am talking about. I guarantee you won't regret dining here.

Day 2 - Taipei 101, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Maokong Gondola

My second day in Taipei is a really busy one. I was so excited to finally see the world-famous Taipei 101. It has been a long time that it was on my dream-destinations list. That day I will finally have it crossed out! Yahoo!

The Taipei 101 is located in the Xinyi District. It is accessible via the Taipei City Hall MRT station (Blue Line - Nangang). I chose to walk from the exit to 101. You can also rent a bike to go around the area.

I had lunch at the Grand Market, located at the basement of 101, which is equivalent to a food court here in Pinas. I could compare it to a floor at Podium or a portion of Serendra-Fort. The whole place was so clean.

This was was highly recommended by a friend who visited Taiwan last year. Their hainanese chicken rice is so good. My lunch only cost me NTD$150 (P220).

My next stop is the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall which is located in the Zhongzheng District. Exit 5 of the CKS MRT Station is right beside the hall! The place was huge, enough to say that the former Chinese president is very much revered.

This is the hall that houses an enormous statue of President CKS. One of the attractions here is the hourly changing-of-the-guards ceremony.

Make sure you bring a bottle of water while touring CKS to keep you hydrated. Should you forget, there are several beverage vendos at the entrance of the square. An umbrella is also a must to protect you from the scorching heat of the sun.

My final stop is the Maokong Gondola.

This gondola mode of transportation runs between Taipei Zoo and Maokong. It has four stations: Taipei Zoo, Taipei Zoo South, Zhinan Temple and Maokong.

This marks the end of the gondola trip -- Maokong. I was surprised that in a remote area like this, people (local or tourist) come here to eat. You can find a row of restaurants and tea houses in Maokong.

As you exit the Maokong Gondola Station, these boards list all the teahouses along the road.

On my way back, I just had to take the Eyes of Maokong Gondola. This crystal cabin has a glass bottom which lets you see what's below -- not for the faint-hearted. :-)

The Maokong Gondola has been closed and reopened a few times due to safety, ventilation and environmental concerns. But all the issues have been addressed and it has been operational since April 2010.

Ni hao, Taiwan!

My trip to Taiwan is my first time to travel ALONE and this time in a different country. I have had hesitations to go explore destinations by myself merely because I was scared. But after Taiwan, I realized that once in your life you should have travelled alone.

There are benefits to solitary travel:

You go at your own pace. You don't need to wait on anyone. No consideration whatsoever with what people think of the room, the food, etc.
You go where you want to go. If you enjoy nature and hate museums, then go where you feel you will enjoy more. Take time taking photographs.
You learn so many things about yourself. During the trip I figured I am really good at reading maps and following directions :-)
It's fun to get lost! One time I missed my bus stop and decided to just get off the bus in a place I have no information about. It turned out to be an adventure as I found out it was a district full of cosmetic clinics.

The only disadvantage of travelling all by yourself is that no one is there to take your photos. But it's alright. Taiwan is not about me, anyway. :-)

Going around Taipei will be very easy for travelers as the Metro Taipe (MRT) is there to bring you to anywhere in the city. Most tourist destinations are just walking distance from the station. Don't worry, names and directions have English translations in ALL MRT stations.

TIP: Avail the pre-loaded EasyCard which you can use in the MRT, bus and the Maokong Gondola. I had mine loaded with $500, surprisingly that's more than enough for a 3-day tour of Taipei. I was even refunded the remaining balance before I left for the airport on my last day of stay.

DAY 1 - Sun Yat-Sen Memorial, Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Shilin Night Market

There's a dedicated station for this destination.

Longshan Temple

This is one of the oldest temples in Taiwan. It'll take you about a minute to reach the temple gates from the MRT station. Worshipppers offer food and prayers to Buddha. At the back of the temple sits a huge Golden Buddha.

National Palace Museum

This is a haven for food lovers like me. Accessible via the Jiantan MRT Station.

The very famous STINKY TOFU which I loved so much! I even had a second serving :)

Ang Sarap sa CASA RAP!

I had an opportunity to visit a secret gem in San Jose, Batangas. Casa Rap Restaurant is owned by former nun Sister Emma Alday. It's located at Km. 90 National Highway in San Jose. They serve really good yet affordable food here.

This is their signature salad. I so love it! Freshly picked from Sister Emma's own garden. So colorful, I almost didn't wanna touch it :)

Another specialty is the Halo-Halo. Casa Rap does not use ice but buko sherbet.

Still in experimental level, Sister Emma is growing her own strawberries.

This one really caught my eye. I wanna bring this home! :)

Another classic piece. This aquarium is recycled from a vehicle windshield.

Sister Emma says the restaurant is still in progress. If she has time and resources, she tries to fill up the space with more tables and chairs.

I definitely want to go back, hopefully to have a chat again with Sister Emma. :)

my CDO & CAMIGUIN adventures!!!

I just felt the need to post this to provide information to those planning to go to CDO & Camiguin. Hope this helps.

We arrived in CDO at around 6:20 am. The first terrible experience in a new city is to be charged by a taxi driver with P250, from the airport to Plaza Divisoria!!! Taxis that belong to that association should have some time with Mon Tulfo on BITAG! So make sure to ride a metered taxi or else you’ll have a headache.

Our chosen hotel, Park View, is just near Divisoria, surrounded by retail stores, fast food restaurants, fruit stands and a lot more. 8:30am is meeting time at Plaza Divisoria with KAGAY, a group offering whitewater rafting & kayaking adventures to tourists and locals as well. According to Roldan, head count is around 70 so it’s gonna be really fun. The trip to a part of Cagayan River, the boundary between CDO & Bukidnon, takes about 45 minutes. Before heading to our own boats, we were given final instructions about paddling directions, proper positions, and capsizing—just in case. The whole adventure is composed of 14 rapids (class 2 & 3), to be completed in 4 hours.

Seeing the first rapid, my heart wanted to jump out of my chest and I seemed to have lost my breath. SUCCESS!!! We survived! (Raise paddles) Completing all the rapids was a fulfillment. I just couldn’t believe I was brave enough to do whitewater rafting. It was sooooo much fun, a really unforgettable part of my life.

We then proceeded to Macahambus Adventure Park for our next activities—Skybridge & Zipline. It was only a 20-minute jeepney ride from the end of the rapid course. The skybridge is attached to century-old lawaan trees 490 feet above the ground, whew!!! There are three partitions & you can’t avoid looking down because of the bridge planks. You wouldn’t wanna miss a step, would you? Surprisingly, after the rapid adventure, my Beyb & I took the bridge experience with overflowing enthusiasm, the adrenaline rush was sky-high! Halfway through the third partition, excitement was rushing because the zipline is next. Attaching the body to a rope for safety, whoooosh!!!! There I was flying across the trees below. It felt really great!

On our way home, the sharing of fun stories was endless. Participants were dropped off at their respective hotels, tired but extremely happy. My friends & I decided to have an early dinner since our energy vanished earlier in the day. Jo’s Inato was our pick. Looking at the menu, all dishes are reasonably priced and the interiors are a bonus. Customers are expected to use their hands for eating although you can ask for utensils. Suit yourself!

Day 2 – Head for CAMIGUIN

We left Park View at 5:30am to catch an early ferry ride to Benoni (port of entry to Camiguin). We took a METERED taxi to bring us to Agora Terminal. The fare only cost us P50. To get to Balingoan Pier, one should ride a bus bound for Butuan (fare is P119). Arriving at the pier around 8:30am, a wooden vessel was waiting to load more passengers. But since we were all doubtful of its capability to bring us safely to our destination, we opted to go for the 9am trip (which actually left at 9:30) with a much safer-looking watercraft.

The trip to Benoni took one and a half hours. Our contact was already waiting for us with a multicab that will tour us around the island. Since we're all famished the gang decided to have an early lunch at J&A Fishpen & Restaurant, overlooking Tanguines Lagoon. Tanguines is a man-made lagoon located in Mahinog. At J&A, you can order the fish you like and they will catch it straight from the pond. My boyfriend and I ordered for Halabos na Hipon and Chopsuey, which are actually good for 3 persons. While waiting for the food, we enjoyed the scenery and took lots of photographs. Upon seeing the waiter walking towards our table, we were delighted. The meals look really delicious so we didn't waste any more time and started filling our stomachs.

After lunch, we headed first to our house to drop our bags. For P1300, our group gets to stay at a two-bedroom airconditioned home located in the Rocky Village. It's actually in a compound where the owner also resides and a minute walk to boats that bring people to White Island. Anyways, we jumped onto the multicab for our island tour. First stop is the STO. NINO COLD SPRINGS. Checking the cold spring pool through the gate we were surprised that locals were all over the place! SCRAP! To our next destination we go.

The huge CROSS MARKER we see from afar marks the community cemetery that sunk during the volcanic eruption in 1871. Since we got there around 4pm, the waters were not very peaceful plus the fact that it was a windy day. For P15 we crossed the raging waters with a banca tied to a long rope stretching from the Cross Marker. The Sunken Cemetery is now regarded as a diving site.

Next stop is KATIBAWASAN FALLS. Entrance fee to this majestic beauty is P15. Dipping in the ice-cold water is a fun experience. Tourists and locals can spend some quality time here. Picnic tables, seats and cooking area are also available.

The last destination for the day is ARDENT HOT SPRINGS. It is composed of various pools whose waters come from Mount Hibok-Hibok. Water temperature is about 38 degrees Celsius. This place is best for night swimming after a long busy day in the island. Ardent also offers cottages, a restaurant, picnic tables and cooking facilities.

Day 3 – To WHITE ISLAND we go

Waking up at around 5:30, we were all excited to go swimming and snorkeling at White Island, Camiguin's famous white sand bar. The boat trip lasted for 15 minutes. No worries because the water is calm, and while on the boat you can see the picturesque Hibok-Hibok. They say the sand bar changes its shape according to the tide. As soon as we get off, we didn't waste any more time. We selected the table at the far end of the island and quickly changed into our swimming attire.

Taking photographs was non-stop! We just can't let this encounter without living each moment this paradise. The water is great but be sure to wear your aqua shoes to protect your feet from small rocks and plants underwater. Beyb & I literally didn't leave the water until lunch time. The whole group spent P200 for the meal—grilled squid and rice. We only had limited choices so we came to an agreement to stop by any roadside restaurant on our way to the pier later in the day. After lunching, there's no place else to go but the water so swimming and photo-ops continued. At around 1:30pm, we packed up our things and went back to the house. The whole boat ride cost us only P400 (divided among 7 people is P58) which is a good deal.

At the house, while preparing for our long trip to Siargao, Beyb convinced the whole group to stop by Duka Bay in Medina, Misamis Oriental for more snorkeling. Yes, we just can't get enough. Because of a sudden change in the itinerary, majority decided to just have a quick rinse so we could catch the last trip back to Balingoan. At the pier, it turned out we were 45 minutes early. So while waiting for the ship to depart, we grabbed a bite at a restaurant near the Tanguines Lagoon.

Overall, our Camiguin trip was really fun. A tip is not to stay in the island for too long. Three days, i guess, is the maximum since there's not really much to see after visiting White Island and doing the island tour (which you can complete in a day).

A Series of Unfortunate Events in BICOL

During the first weekend of December, my friends and I went to Legaspi and CamSur. Thanks to the ABSOLUTELY free tickets from Cebu Pacific, we were able to set foot in the Bicol Region.

As the plane landed in Legaspi, we had a feeling the weather isn't one with us. As we exit the plane, the strong winds made the trees sway madly as if there was a typhoon. But there was none. It was the cold front, the weather report said. We got a bit scared so we decided not to push through with our first activity--the Cagsawa Ruins. It's gonna be useless since the Mayon seemed to be hiding itself in the clouds.

So we headed to the terminal and took the shuttle-van to Pili where CWC is. It was a 2-hour drive from Legaspi (costs P140). The driver was kind enough to drop us off near the Capitol Complex. We rode a tricycle (P7/head) to bring us to EcoVillage. The village was far from the wakeboarding area but a shuttle is always on call to bring guests to the cablepark.

Here's a series of unfortunate events during the said trip:

1. A part of the cable in the main park has malfunctioned that's why guests weren't allowed to "play." Beginners were instructed to use the smaller cablepark.

2. We were enticed by the BUFFET lunch offer at the CWC restaurant if you watch the Pacman-Dela Joya match. After purchasing the tickets, we found out they were only giving us a set meal. PLUS, CWC had a problem with their cable service and people started to get a refund because what they were showing is not the pay-per-view thing!!! Grrr...

3. At the smaller park, where all of us were first-timers, no instructor was there to tell us what to do. The guys we were with, including my friend, volunteered to assist. Too bad my friend was hit by the kneeboard and his nose was bleeding profusely. The cable operator even had the guts to blame my friend for assisting!!! Damn!

4. Next day, with so much eagerness to see Mayon, we headed to Cagsawa Ruins. But it was very cloudy that morning and we were so disappointed not to see the majestic volcano :(

***We only had a great view of Mayon on the way back to the terminal in Legaspi. Desperate as we were, the tricycle driver took a photograph of us (with the Mayon in the background) in the middle of the street hehehe

5. Back at CWC, we decided to go for a dip in the pool since it was our last night. But we weren't allowed at first coz we didn't have the wrist tag issued at the cablepark's reception after you get to pay the P100 fee. They really had a problem with instructions because the receptionists at the Villas casually said we can use the pool since we're checked in. My friend did the complaining and we swam for free hehe (sindakan lang!).

6. Our flight to Manila via Air Philippines got cancelled! REASON: bad weather. Duh! It was sunny all day. Because of the need to really go home, Monah & I endured the 9-hour bus ride to Manila from Naga. Too tiring!

But overall, we pretty much had a great time despite all these booboos.

Important: If you're planning to go to CWC in the next couple of weeks, be sure to call them and ask if the main cablepark is already operational so as not to waste time having a long trip.

Lakbay Pinas!

I'm definitely back to blogging! Consider this my first post (again! lol).

Reposting my updated Lakbayan map and my grade has gone up to C+ (from C). It's been really great having the chance to travel and see the beautiful islands of our dear country. Thanks to Cebu Pacific for giving out ABSOLUTELY FREE tickets.

My BOHOL Adventure

It's never too late to share a great travel experience especially when you're with good friends.

Bohol is an amazing place, Panglao is a paradise.

My trip to Bohol in with a few of my good friends is not something I'll just keep to myself. We actually waited for 4 months for this (having booked last May) and everything we experienced was worth the long wait, except for a significant amount of money stolen from my friend.

For those planning to go to Bohol or had booked already their trip, you may contact Mang Leonard for the vehicle that will tour you around. His number is 0921227508. Not only will he serve as your driver, but a tour guide as well. The spots included in Mang Leonard's tour are the Chocolate Hills, Butterfly Sanctuary, Man-made Forest, Hanging Bridge, the Tarsiers, Loboc River (where people have buffet lunch while cruising), the Blood Compact Site and Baclayon Church. Other tour guides, according to Mang Leonard, only go to 5-6 places.

After the tour, Mang Leonard suggested that we stay in Dumaluan Resort in the beautiful island of Panglao. And so we did. Since we're all budget travelers, we opted to stay in the treehouse (P1,200 a night, good for 5pax). The five of us were given mattresses and blankets. We made the best decision to just stay there because it got really cold during the night, no airconditioning required. A common CR is provided for occupants of the kubos. No worries because the 4 bathrooms are really clean and there was an abundant supply of water for each. You may even ask Mang Leonard to reserve the kubo for you.

Attack of the BIRTHDAY syndrome

Have you ever had that feeling a week or days before your birthday? It's a combination of melancholy and excitement. It is something you cannot explain and yet it has an oversized effect on you.

Because of recent events in the office, I have been experiencing a great amount of stress. I sometimes find myself staring at nothing. Before I sleep I think about a lot -- things that I never though I would even think about.

In two days, I'll add another year to my undefined life huhuhu...But on the other hand I thank God for giving me another year to focus on my goals and fulfill them. I thank HIM for my family who has always been there to support me...and the truest of my FRIENDS who keep me sane.

Me, Myself & I

Today I have finally gotten the chance to be with myself after such a long time. November 30 is a holiday and it fell on my rest day too so I've got the whole day to do what I want.

A manicure and pedicure treat at the salon is my first stop. It's been like 2 months since I had my toenails & fingernails cleaned up. When I was finally sure that the nail polish dried up already, I then prepared for dinner with some high school friends at Dencio's Starmall Las Pinas. I met with Val & Tina. We enjoyed long hours of chat & updating ourselves with what happened in the past months. Tina recently got engaged (I'm so happy for you, sis!) and Val is now in her first semester as a nursing student. I told them everything that happened to me, mostly the sad episodes.

I am just very glad to know that in the midst of all the difficulties I'm experiencing right now, there are TWO good good friends in front of me who never fail to cheer me up and reassure me of better things to come. I love you guys!

A bad day...

Today is such a depressing day at the office. I don't think I have the liberty to disclose the details but really this day brought me to rock bottom.

Witnessing those important characters disappear in your movie called "My Home Away From Home" is not a very nice way to start the Christmas season.

I am not sure if this feeling will go away very soon. But I promise to do best in order to help bring those characters back again.

Currently, here are the top choices for my dream destinations here in the Philippines. Trust me the Philippine archipelago is wealthy when it comes to white beaches, sumptuous delicacies and colorful festivals that reflect the rich culture of our forefathers.

1. SIQUIJOR
Siquijor is an island province located in Central Visayas. Its capital is also named Siquijor. To the northwest of the province are Cebu and Negros, to the northeast is Bohol and to the south is Mindanao.

2. APO Island
Apo Island is small volcanic island situated in the southeastern tip of Negros Island, specifically in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental. The marine habitat around the island is a protected area.

3. PAGUDPUD Island
Pagudpud is famous for its white-sand beaches and crystal-blue waters.

4. BOHOL
Bohol is one of the most visited tourist destinations with its beaches and resorts. The Chocolate Hills is definitely the most popular attraction. The island of Panglao is a must-see as well as the Tarsier which is indigenous to the island.

5. CLAVERIA
Claveria may be a 4th class municipality in the province of Cagayan but it offers natural wonders too. It is approximately 185.3 kilometers from Tuguegarao, the center of Cagayan Valley.

It's been a while since I posted an entry here. Well I got busy with other stuff--work (yeah right!), life and my Maqx.

Hmmm...Last Sunday I watched The Simpsons Movie with my friend Mela at SM Southmall. I actually enjoyed the film since I am a self-confessed Simpsons fan. It was like watching a three-episode run on TV, without commercials.

I also wanna catch Ratatouille! B and I have seen the trailer months back and I just can't let the week pass without seeing it on the big screen. For me it's another refreshing story. How creative to conceptualize a rat aspiring to become a famous chef in Paris someday.

Oh well...there are no more activities lined up until the end of the week.

Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix: The iMAX Experience

This is the fifth of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Harry is in his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Lord Voldemort is also back with greater powers.

One of the film's major showcases is Harry's hearing at the Ministry of Magic for the use of magic in the presence of a muggle, particularly Dudley. Potter actually comjured the Patronus curse to defend him and Dudley to ward off the Dementors who attacked them in a tunnel. This scene didn't really come out as horrible as what is described in the book. Of course it is understandable that not everything in the book shall be included.

My friends and I are fortunate to catch the flick on iMAX at the Mall of Asia, with more than 20 minutes of scenes on 3D. I guess that was the only rewarding part, being able to see the awaited Voldemort-Harry battle right in front of you.

Aside from Sirius Black, who was not given much exposure (hmp!), I find the character of Dolores Umbridge really cute. Those who know me will say right away the reason for this. Her PINK outfits are fashionable and her girlish voice has this commanding quality that viewers will find really annoying.

Overall, although Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix may not be the best film of the year, it still is "awfully" good and entertaining.

Die HARDEST!!!

If you are looking for real action, then Die Hard 4.0 is definitely for you! Witness cars flying on top of each other, a car-helicopter collision and bullets coming from everywhere. But with an action-packed flick starring an "older-looking" (for me hehe) Bruce Willis, who plays police detective John McClane, don't expect that something has changed with his acting. You've seen Sixth Sense? or Hostage? I say DO NOT expect.

4.0 tackled cyber terrorism on a higher level--a FIRESALE. That's what they call it. It's a three-stage process to shut down the information infrastructure of the United States. It's computer hacking to the highest level!

McClane, aided by hacker Matthew Farrell, played by Justin Long (Jeepers Creepers II & Dodgeball), was able to stop a gang of virtual terrorists.

I give the film 4/5 stars. A must-see for action addicts.

Bridal Shower AGAIN :-)

Last night I was at Redbox Greenbelt to attend the bridal shower for my friend Michie. Her mom was very creative to set a Princess mood in the room. We all wore a small crown, I chose the PINK one (of course).

The Saint Paul people owned the microphone and performed I think 20+ songs. We wanted really the guests to have fun, even the young ONCE, that's why we all sang--performance level! Hahaha

Fraulie & Abby were tasked to think of games suited for the event. We had the MASHING game (aka Palambutin Mo Baby) using eggplants, the BANANA-eating contest, and BLOW the CONDOM. Surely Michie enjoyed the night especially that she was required to join the games.

Before calling it a night, we didn't know there was another surprise. The crowns we're wearing actually had numbers in them. Each number corresponds to a special gift from the bride. I got a lotion & cologne.

Last Sunday, my dad & I watched The Transformers. Next to Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix, I have waited with so much enthusiasm for this flick.

Witnessing my favorite heroes moving again, and this time on the silver screen, brought me back to my childhood days. I'm sure a lot of you would agree. I remember those days when my brother used to draw Optimus Prime on the street because he is his favorite.

Yes, a lot of people would criticize that this film contains so much violence not suited for children but that is how it's supposed to be. Nobody would want the battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons to be boring! C'mon, many of us too have waited for years to see them again.

So, better go to your favorite cinemas to see for yourself!

showers & weddings

Two days ago, my friends from St. Paul & I suprised our friend Thecx at her room in Vivere Suites in Alabang. I wouldn't really call it a bridal shower because we failed to bring a stripper--the most important element of a shower. Hehehe...Anyways, she was really surprised & glad we kept her company while waiting for her gown, a Veluz creation.

The next day was her big day. Getting married at the Church (St. James Parish in Ayala, Alabang) is a blessing even though they were wed already civilly in New York. I wasn't able to witness the bridal march but the guests say it was really very emotional. Thecx looked gorgeous in her gown, so as Charlie, her husband.

Reception followed at The Palms in Alabang. Food was awesome. Our table was in a strategic area of the grand ballroom--just beside the BUFFET table. I can't even remember how many times I went back to the chocolate fountain. :-)

Overall, the guests had fun. The couple enjoyed the night & we all wished them well.

Next agenda:
Bridal shower again on Wednesday for Michie, still a friend of mine from St. Paul. Her wedding is on Saturday at Christ the King Church in Green Meadows.

It's WIMBLEDON season again, my favorite of the four grand slam events. It is played on grass surface and held at this time of the year at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in London. The tournament lasts for two weeks, considering that occasional rains sometimes delay the games. My bet of course is the defending (4th successive year) Gentlemen's Singles champion & World No. 1 Roger Federer. I really hope he bags the trophy again and equal the record of Bjorn Borg who won 5 consecutive Wimbledon Gentlemen's Singles titles. For the women's singles, I go for Maria Sharapova--both for playing style (minus the yelling) & fashion inspiration on the court. Hehe...

FAST FACTS:

1. A wooden racket was last used at Wimbledon in 1987.
2. There will be approximately 200 ball boys and girls running around the courts at this year's event.
3. There are currently 20 grass courts available for play at the Wimbledon complex.
4. The youngest player ever to compete at Wimbledon was Mita Klima from Austria, who was 13 during her 1907 singles competition.

Last night, my friend Mela & I watched "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer." It was just OK with me. I expected more from this flick. I waited with so much excitement for its release but there was a bit of disappointment. The special effects were great but the romantic thing between the silver guy & the invisible woman was "Filipinoish". Hehehe

I just got a text message from my friend Thecz who is already based in New York. She's actually in town for three weeks only for one of the most important chapters of her life--her wedding. She's inviting us (her pals from Saint Paul) for lunch tomorrow at the Mall of Asia. She will be Mrs. Apun on June 29th. The matrimonial ceremony will be held at St. James Parish Church in Ayala, Alabang, reception follows at The Palms.

Today is one of my worst days as a commuter.

It's a Saturday and I'm not expecting much traffic in Alabang since there are no classes today. Usually, buses bound for Lawton are few on weekends. I was lucky there was one already loaded with passengers. I chose a comfortable seat and with much confidence I know I'll be just in time for my shift.

The conductor says "with e-pass" and passing by iskaywi :-)...But right before we reached the Skyway entry, the bus suddenly went the other way. DAMN!!!! Sure I'll be late.

Certainly I was. Grrrr!!!!

my PALAWAN adventure (February 2007)

This is my very first plane ride. I flew to Puerto Princesa with my dad and sister via a Cebu Pacific flight. This trip is actually my Kuya’s Christmas gift to us (one of the nicest gifts I ever received actually). Our plane took off on time and I must admit I wasn’t feeling good while it was taxiing at the Domestic Airport . But surprisingly, the fear turned to excitement when I heard the Airbus engine’s noise. Papa and ate both said the plane is now off the ground. Not a bad experience for a first timer like me, it was just fine. Better than riding that small boat going to Puerto Galera. We landed right on time. It was funny because I saw a guy raising this placard with my name on it. Right then I knew he was from the hotel we’ll be staying at for 4 days and 3 nights. Duchess Pension House (www.duchesspensionpalawan.com) turned out to be a cozy place after all. Miss Tricia, our contact, was very accommodating (the same way she is when we were still texting each other). We had a reservation for a family room (P700/day, quite a good deal), it was spacious with a big T&BR.

DAY 1 – AFTER LUNCH – CITY TOUR

Our first stop is the Butterfly Garden . It is located in the southern part of the city. After viewing a short film about butterflies, we headed to their sanctuary. If you are into these insects, you’ll surely enjoy getting a closer look at them because they come in different colors and sizes. Next destination is Crocodile Farm. The institute implements a 30-minute interval per group of tourists. Lucky us, we didn’t get to wait too long. They now have approximately 1500 baby crocodiles, bred in captivity. If you are interested to have them as pets, feel free to contact the institute. Third destination is the Iwahig Penal Colony, a.k.a. Prison Without Bars. Inmates from minimum security (color code: brown) can freely roam the 28,000 hectares of land provided they report for headcount in the morning and evening. Mitra’s Ranch, the fourth stop in the tour, is the residence of the late House Speaker Ramon Mitra, Jr., highlighting the large trunk of tree supporting the whole house. Near the ranch is Baker’s Hill—famous for its hopia and tuna pandesal. This isn’t an ordinary bakeshop. People, most especially tourists spend their merienda hours to experience freshly-baked items at super affordable prices. (Take note, one box of hopia, 10pcs regular size, only costs P26.)

DAY 2 – HONDA BAY

We settled for a hassle-free tour since we're not familiar with the barrios and municipalities of Puerto Princesa. Entry to this amazing destination is via Honda Bay Wharf. First stop is SNAKE Island (called so because it is shaped like a snake). This is a very good site for snorkeling, fish feeding and plain swimming. Next is Starfish island which is also recommended for snorkeling. By the way there are 5 Nemos (clown fish) here. Lu-Li (lulubog-lilitaw) Island is the final stop. Highlighted at Lu-Li is the diving board that guests should try (but I never did). I think the water is 10 to 15 feet deep.

Day 3 - UNDERGROUND RIVER TRIP

I must warn you that the trip to the Subterranean River is a challenge. One needs to endure a two-and-a-half-hour trip on a super rough road. The tourist guide calls it the "Palawan massage", and indeed it is. But once you get to the cave entry, the excitement will start. Paddling inside the cave, the boatman points at the various images formed by the stalactites and stalagmites. There's a giant candle, the Virgin Mary, a banana heart, the Holy Family, Smokey Mountain (yes!), the face of Jesus Christ and a lot lot more. The National Park limits the river trip to only a kilometer (the whole stretch is more that 8 kms).

MAQX, our baby pug, just turned 4 months last June 18. He's becoming more adorable every single day. Since he came to our home, his weight already tripled. But no worries, the vet says it's just normal for a baby pup like him. We don't overfeed him, we try to avoid that.

He's a joy to the family. Maqx keeps me sane whenever I miss his "daddy."
